Slightly Funky (2017) for Bb Trumpet and Multiple Percussion

Published by Per-Mus Publications - www.permus.com

Chosen for performance at the 2020 International Trumpet Guild (ITG) National Conference

Percussive Arts Society Review:

This new work is a duet for multiple percussion and trumpet, centered on the idea of the funk music of Galactic and James Brown. The music itself is fairly straight forward, although both of the performers need to feel comfortable with syncopated rhythms. A suggested setup is given in the score to allow for ease of movement during the execution of the work.

The piece is based on a simple motif in the trumpet part. This idea is traded with the percussionist. Meyers does an excellent job of having the percussionist be another melodic voice in the work,
as opposed to just a timekeeper for the trumpet. The solo sections for the percussion are very musical and melodic. The trumpet part seems accessible for most players, staying in a middle range of the instrument and not venturing too far from that. The syncopations lead to the “funkiness” while the soloistic nature of the percussion is more concert-oriented. This piece would go great on an undergraduate recital, or for a couple of advanced high school players.

Four Reflections (2017) for Marimba

Solo Marimba (4.3 octave marimba)

Published by Per-Mus Publications - www.permus.com

Percussive Arts Society Review:

This piece was composed with the idea that each movement could be played individually or as a group. Each piece is approximately two minutes long.

The movements, “Echo of Time,” “Gentle Waves,” “Free as a Kite,” and “Go With It!” are very different compositionally. The first movement is an exploration of 7th chords, one-handed octaves, and duple and triple meters. The second movement is a beautiful choral that offers a lot of expressive and artistic opportunity. The third movement is very rhythmic while presenting the performer with the chance to explore a more rubato style. The final movement is an exciting A-B-A-B form that pushes the performer both technically and musically.

I would recommend “Four Reflections for Marimba” for a college audition, upper-division barrier/jury, or junior recital. It would be a great piece for intermediate marimba players who are looking to take the next step in their development both musically and techni- cally.

In and Out (2016) for Trombone and Timpani

Published by Per-mus Publications - www.permus.com

Percussive Arts Society Review:

“In and Out” is a true duet, with both instruments participating equally in the musical dialogue. The piece begins with a thunderous fanfare of call-and-response motives between the timpani and trom- bone, followed by a short section that features both instruments in lyrical passages. Alternating between 4/4 and 3/4, the next section quickens in pace with both instruments taking on the role of melody and counter-melody at different times. The tempo continues to build in each major section, with the initial call- and-response returning at the end of this four-minute duet.

The timpani part can be played on five drums of standard sizes, but a few quick changes in the first section would be easier with six drums (an additional 23- or 26-inch drum). Tuning changes are
straightforward, but not notated. Short, fun, and a little challenging, this piece is very appropriate for two intermediate players new to chamber music playing.
